MONTHLY CHAPTER MEETING

SUMMER CAMPS & MOTHER-CHILD BONDING

WEDNESDAY,  FEBRUARY 20TH, 6:30 PM

PLEASE NOTE EARLIER THAN USUAL TIME SO KIDS CAN ATTEND!

Bring the kids, and join us as we explore parent-child bonding through Summer Camps and camp games!

Camp Kupugani director Kevin Gordon will present a 10 minute slideshow, and then lead us through games used at his camp that inspire connection, attachment, trust and bonding. Several Holistic Moms have attended a Parent-Child camp at Camp Kupugani!

Following the games, parents and kids can share their experiences with a variety of different types of summer camps (arts, STEM, theater, improv, sports, local, sleep away, etc) for kids ages 5 to 15.

Camp Kupugani - https://campkupugani.com:
"Our Parent-Child weekend provides a fantastic opportunity for Mom or Dad and a child to reinforce the parental bonds and connect with other parents and children. Our relaxing, natural environment, combined with team building and empowerment activities, helps our participants celebrate the essential relationship between parents and children. Fun activities like pool time, dam jumping, and GaGa, also helps to deepen bonds."

Kevin Gordon is a Harvard University graduate in psychology and the Canadian-born son of Jamaican immigrants. Camp Director Kevin has worked with children for over thirty years. He has been in the camp business since 1990, when he first worked at a girls camp in Wisconsin. After earning his BA at Harvard, Kevin continued working as an assistant camp director, backpacked across Europe shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, traveled throughout Africa, and wrote Not Yet African, a book chronicling his African adventures. While gaining valuable experience at camps from Pennsylvania to California, Kevin earned his JD from the University of California-Berkeley School of Law. He went on to work for a top-100 law firm, where he gained additional expertise in management and organizational psychology.

Meeting Location:  Steeple Run Clubhouse, 6s050 Steeple Run Drive, Naperville, IL.

MARCH MEETING...SAVE THE DATE!

MEMBER HIGHLIGHT

LARISA ALONSO

How long have you been a member of HMN?:
I became a member in 2017 when I moved from Florida to New Jersey and found myself having to establish a network of holistic Moms and practitioners all over again. I needed the support and recommendations of practitioners in the area. It was truly a blessing.

I am a holistic mom because:
I was holistic before I was ever a Mom. My personal journey started many years ago when I was 16 years old and was one of the reasons I became a functional medicine/ holistic nutritionist. Now that I am a Mom it just seems to be even more meaningful and important that I follow this path and follow my instincts. So I have over the years incorporated more than nutrition, such as homeopathy, herbal medicine, use of supplements, massage, acupuncture, etc. I am always learning and incorporating more methods into my repertoire. I also want to model for my family that one needs to be responsible for one's own health and healing and that there are many paths one can take-research is important, talking to others, availing oneself of holistic practitioners, and asking lots of questions. I love it when my son says, "Mommy I am not feeling well, I need elderberry syrup and colloidal silver and vitamin C"!

My holistic passions are:
Nutrition! I own a small herbal company that focuses on herbs from Africa for specific diseases, Equatorial Herbals (www.equatorialherbals.com) and I love working with these unique herbs. But I am also passionate and interested in everything else that has to do with holistic living, everything from what I store and cook our food in to what we put on or in our bodies to what I wash our clothes with to how our food is raised or grown.

What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?
The Moms of HMN are super. I am so grateful to be able to have a group of like minded Moms to share with, learn from and lean on when I need it. I learn something new everyday and it amazes me how much collective knowledge there is on so many subject matters in this group. This inspires me to never stop learning or experimenting. This group also gives me strength to fight the good fight, with honey (raw, unfiltered) of course!

One of my favorite recipes:

Zucchini Stuffed with Brown Rice

6 medium sized zucchini, cut in half lengthwise, steamed until crisp tender
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 cup brown rice (I use quinoa)
2 1/4 cups Homemade chicken stock
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/4 pound fresh mushrooms, diced into small pieces
1/2 cup diced red bell pepper
1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh mint leaves
2 tablespoons minces parsley
1/3 cup toasted pine nuts
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

With a spoon, scoop out and discard seeds and some pulp from zucchini. Set shells aside. In a medium size saucepan heat 1 tablespoon of the oil over medium heat. Add onion; saute 3 minutes. Add rice; cook stirring 1 minute longer. Add chicken stock and lemon juice. Bring mixture to a boil. Cover pan; reduce heat to low. Cook 15 minutes. Remove from heat. Allow pan to stand, undisturbed,10 minutes. Heat a medium size skillet over medium high heat. Add remaining oil. Add mushrooms and bell pepper; saute until tender and blend into rice. Stir in mint, parsley, pine nuts, salt and black pepper. Preheat oven to 375 F. Place zucchini into a large, oiled baking dish. Spoon rice mixture into shells, sprinkle each with cheese. Bake 10 minutes or until hot.

The Disastrous State Of Prenatal Care In America & Its Link To Autoimmune Disorders (Including AUTISM)

We all know that a healthy pregnancy leads to a healthier baby, but are we doing enough?

We are following the advice of our physician so why are we facing an epidemic of sick children?  As advanced as our society is, I believe allopathic doctors miss the mark when it comes to prenatal care.  There are many things our doctors are not telling us.

Here are some tips (I wish I had) to help improve the health and well-being of my future children.

POWERFUL RESOURCE: Brain Under Attack

Does your child have rages, OCD, tics, aggressive behaviour, prolonged tantrums and/or anxiety?

Is your child exhibiting sudden behavioral changes or a developmental regression?

Your child may have PANS, an umbrella term which includes diagnoses such as PANDAS, PITANDS, and Autoimmune Encephalitis -all of which describe a condition marked by concerning psychiatric and physical symptoms that often appear suddenly.

'Brain Under Attack' is a must read that I co-authored with Beth Lambert, MA, Maria Rickert Hong, CHHC, AADP, Roseann Capanna-Hodge, EDD, LPC, BCN and Lauren Lee Stone, PHD, MS, HHP, BCIH.

JENN RECOMMENDS: BLUE LIGHT BLOCKING GLASSES

Do you spend the majority of your day staring at a screen? How about your kids?

While cutting back on screen time is my top recommendation, I do also suggest looking into blue light blocking glasses to at least cut back on the amount of harmful blue light you're exposing yourself to.
