Monthly Chapter Meeting
Music Therapy
Tuesday, May 6th, 7pm

Music therapy is an evidenced based practice that helps people use music to achieve non-musical goals in life. Music therapy has been shown to help with issues of chronic or acute pain, anxiety, depression, rehabilitation, grief and bereavement. In fact, music therapy is used to promote wellness in all stages of life, from childbirth through hospice care. Kate Taylor, board certified music therapist and labor support doula, will be addressing how you can learn to use music to promote more wholeness and wellness in your life. Kate will demonstrate ways in which you can use music as a resource in your family's everyday life. Kate will present information about how our brains process music and how music affects all of our body processes. Kate will show you that music is truly one of the most holistic and accessible resources available to you. Kate will offer examples of how you can utilize music in various ways, from motivating your kids to do homework, easing tension and anxiety to creating lasting memories from your birth or loved one's death. Kate has worked as a board certified music therapist since 1999 and has experience in mental health, integrated creative arts, hospice care and medical models of music therapy like neurological music therapy and music therapy assisted childbirth. If you've ever listened to a piece of music and been moved to tears, heard a song and recalled a memorable event or if you've ever played a certain song for added intensity to your workout then you won't want to miss hearing about music as a holistic resource for living.

How long have you been a member of Holistic Moms?  5+ years

I am a holistic mom because:  I joined HMN because the more meetings I attended, the more I learned.  And the more I learned, the more I wanted to learn.  I have evolved quite a bit in the past few years and have learned that I want to continue to grow as I age.  Now that I'm in my early 40s with three young children, my interests have shifted toward finding balance in parenting and desires to expand my personal horizons and opportunities.  I continue to find HMN a wonderful resource and community in which I can grow personally.  I have found my closest friends here, where I can be my truest self.

My holistic passions are:
I am very passionate about a healthy living environment, nutritious food, and alternative medicine (especially homeopathy).

What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?  I continue to be inspired by the community of HMN.  The concept of "Many Hands Make for Light Work" is so true in our chapter.  Everyone chips in where they can and that makes us one of the strongest, most sustainable chapters in the country.

Another thing that inspires me most is the welcoming of differences.  We're all so fundamentally alike in our group, yet we celebrate and appreciate our differences.  For example, we members who are "meat lovers" and some who are vegans. I love that we can all support one another in our holistic lifestyles regardless of what we eat.  We each hold an open mind, and that is something to strive for in our daily lives as we raise our healthy families.

One of my favorite healthy recipes:

This is my mother in law Carla's oven beef stew.  Its a hearty meal, so simple and so delicious.

  • 2 lb beef for stew cut. 1" cubes
  • 4-5 med potatoes cut into chunks
  • 6 carrots, cut in chunks
  • 4 stalks celery, cut in 1" pieces
  • 3-4 sm onions cut into chunks (or use sm frozen onions)
  • 1 can beef broth
  • ½ can water or red wine
  • 1 14oz can diced tomatoes
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • 4 Tbsp Minute Tapioca (found in the pudding section at the grocery)
Mix in roasting pan.
Cover w/ foil and bake 4 hours at 325 degrees.
DO NOT TOUCH unless you want to stir after 3 hours (not necessary).
Serve with crusty bread and salad.

If you have not seen it please click the link below to stream it online today. The controversial arrests of Jen Stahl and Kim Bendis plus footage of the installers hoping fences and residents expressing their outrage to council is included.

It is a well done documentary film full of startling finds that not only informs you but gets you stirred up about what is happening with these meters.  A NOT To BE MISSED film.

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is a non-profit 501(c)(4) group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.

Smart meters are currently being installed in Naperville despite a complaint for federal injunction and on-going investigations by the Illinois Attorney General for Open Meetings Act violations by the City of Naperville in conjunction with this project.

Smart meters pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, safety and health and are not a federally mandated program. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.
