Monthly Chapter Meeting
Open Discussion-Choices in Education
Tuesday, August 4th, 2015

Join us for an open discussion to discuss the wide spectrum of non-traditional schooling venues, and philosophies, on education, allowing families to consider all options when discussing their standards for education with the values to match. From various methods of homeschooling to Montessori, Waldorf to Classical, and everything in between, we will compare and contrast major differences and find the similarities of what is best for our childrens' minds, bodies, hearts and souls.

Member Highlight
 Chapter Co-Leader, Dorothy Coop
How long have you been a member of HMN?

Since October of 2008!

Why did you decide to become a chapter leader?

Well, first I was asked to help with the financial and monthly reporting since I'm also a CPA :)  I was so excited to help in any way I could, especially since I was working downtown and couldn't make a lot of events. Then, as time went on, and leaders moved on, I was one of the veterans and was soon helping to plan meetings and introduce our monthly speakers.  I found HMN about a year after my daughter was born and if it hadn't been for this group, it would have been a lot harder to live our holistic lifestyle, and be comfortable speaking out about it.  I am so passionate about bringing awareness to the choices we have, that usually are not brought to the attention of most parents, that I wanted to make sure our chapter kept growing and stayed strong.  So I became a leader, and stayed a leader, so that new parents, like I once was, could find a safe and supportive environment to raise their children in ways that aren't always supported in "mainstream" America.

My holistic passions are:

Chiropractic, especially for kids; real food; education choice; vaccination choice; food labeling; green living; natural birthing; alternative and natural healing modalities; supporting farmers and local business and co-ops

What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?

Since my first HMN meeting, I was inspired with the wealth of knowledge these mamas had.  They were educated, researched and were so strong in their convictions to raise their children they way that was right for their family.
I've also learned SO much thru our monthly meetings - there are so many holistic practitioners and leaders that stay true to their practice and want to the change the world for the better, even in the face of so much ignorance and push back.  We have a strong and vibrant community and it is great to know that there are resources readily available if you need support in a lifestyle choice that may not be "popular" with everyone else.

One of my favorite healthy recipes:

We are moving towards gluten-free so this is one of our favorite comfort food substitutes, from Elana's Pantry:

  • ½ teaspoon celtic sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 2 large heads cauliflower, trimmed, chopped and steamed until very soft

  3. Add bacon pieces to pan and sauté until cooked, about 10 minutes
  4. Add carrots and celery to pan and sauté in bacon fat for 10 minutes until soft
  5. Add ground beef to pan and sauté until brown, just a few minutes
