| Member Highlight Kally McConnell | How long have you been a member of HMN? I joined almost 2 years ago when I was pregnant with my second daughter. She is now 16 months and my oldest was 4 years old in May. I am a holistic mom because: After the birth of my first daughter, I was STRUGGLING with the sleepless nights and was willing to try anything to get her to sleep longer. One of the mom groups I belonged to had a lot of moms who believed in the power of essential oils. I bought a starter pack desperately hoping it would cause my 2 month old to sleep better. She eventually did figure out the sleep and in the process I became obsessed with the oils which led me down at the rabbit hole of holistic living. Choosing to live this way through the way we eat, move, communicate, rest, clean, etc. allows us to be better parents and provides our children with the tools and opportunity to be the best version of themselves also. (However, I will not lie and admit that I let my kids HOUSE (quinoa) mac and cheese on the regular) My holistic passions are: Where do I BEGIN?! I'd have to say my birth experience with my first child really drove my passion for educating and empowering women to have the birth that they personally want. One of the coolest experiences a woman can go through has been insanely tainted by our medical system. We have to know what we want, believe it is possible, and demand that of our healthcare professionals. Pregnant women are not patients or sick; giving them the space to transition into motherhood without unnecessary intervention and then supporting them afterward as they adjust to their new normal is so friggin' important. For that reason, I have just recently taken steps to become a doula. I am currently pre-certified as a postpartum doula and am planning on becoming a birth doula as well. I'm also working on a mindful pregnancy birth class that is so exciting to me. Pregnancy and early mamahood is such a beautiful/difficult time. I'm passionate about preparing women for itd supporting them during it. Check out roadofmamahood.com or @roadofmamahood on Instagram if you're interested in what I'm up to! What inspires you about HMN or holistic living? On a personal level, when I needed advice on a tough dental situation with my daughter, I went to our Facebook group. At least 10 moms quickly reached out with advice and resources. I was literally brought to tears. We saved thousands of dollars on unnecessary dental work for a 4 year old and more importantly, spared her from potential trauma. I will literally be forever grateful to this group for that. These small little efforts to help our community add up. I also find it so inspiring that we as mothers are raising the future generation, the ones who will take care of this planet and each other when we're gone. This group of parents wanting better for their children and finding and sharing that knowledge within a community such as this gives me so much hope. One of my favorite recipes:
This Caesar salad dressing is the best! My mom used to make this it all the time growing up. It always turns out a little differently, but it's consistently delicious.
Ingredients - 2 cups olive oil
- 8 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 4 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp dry mustard
- Hot sauce (amount depends on how spicy you want it)
- 4 eggs
- Whole container of Parmesan (can substitute a few tablespoons of nutritional yeast for dairy free)
- 6 or more cloves of garlic
- Can of anchovies
- Pepper, to taste
- Mix olive oil, lemon juice, Worcestershire, dry mustard, hot sauce in blender
- Poach eggs for ~2min. Let cool and mix with Parmesan
- Mix garlic and anchovies in food processor
- Mix all together in blender and add pepper to taste
- Will keep in fridge for at least a week. Served best with romaine, grilled organic chicken thighs, and homemade gluten free croutons (just tear up gluten free bread on a pan and mix with avocado oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder and bake at 400 until crispy)
