Monthly Chapter Meeting
New Methods for Brain Health
Tuesday, March 7th, 7pm
Join Jeff Lucas, LCPC and Madiha Haroon, LCPC of Dunham Counseling to learn more about techniques like Eye Movement Desensitzation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for emotional balance. This process involves bi-lateral brain stimulation like what occurs in REM sleep to process trauma or difficult emotions.

We will also learn how technology that balances brainwaves by converting them into musical notes or tones in a biofeedback process works.

Krista Sherinian, LCSW, will also teach us about Daniel Amen's (PBS speaker and best-selling author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life) system of "brain-typing." Krista specializes in this area and was personally trained by Dr. Amen in assessment.

How long have you been a member of HMN?
Since 2016

I am a holistic mom because
I believe we are all at our best when we are living as naturally as possible. I go with my gut on a lot of things such as avoiding chemicals whenever possible, feeding my family's bodies with actual whole, real food, and using alternative health as the first source of info or treatment if there is a need. Our bodies are self-healing if we give them the chance to do so.

My holistic passions are:
Energy work and healing with different foods & herbs.

What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?
I am inspired by all of the different knowledge people bring to the group. It makes for a cohesive and insightful group of strong women and I am thankful to have found you all!

What is your favorite healthy recipe?

TUNISIAN-STYLE CHICKPEA AND VEGETABLE TAGINE WITH APRICOT COUSCOUS

1 Tbsp olive oil
2 red onions, peeled and chopped
2 medium carrots, peeled (keep peel if organic) and sliced
2 tsp each ground cinnamon, ground coriander, ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp smoked paprika (optional but very nice)
3 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
500g (1 lb) - or more - of favourite stewing/hard veg, peeled and diced: courgette, butternut squash, sweet potato, fennel, parsnip, swede, turnip, kohlrabi, okra, sweet corn
2 x 400g (14 oz) tins of organic chickpeas (or 225 gm dried chickpeas, soaked and cooked per directions)
2 x 400g (14 oz) tins of organic chopped tomatoes or equivalent of fresh, diced (with juices)
1 small preserved lemon, juiced and the half the peel chopped (about 1 tbsp) - optional
2 tbsps tomato puree (organic if possible) or sun-dried tomato paste
Maldon salt and black pepper to taste
Water or vegetable stock, if needed (don't use stock if using the preserved lemon as the preserved lemon adds all the salt you need)
Cooked couscous with dried apricots (see below), optional
Fresh mint, chopped - to serve

Heat the oil in a large lidded pan over a low-medium heat. Add the onions and carrots and saute gently for 10 minutes with the lid loosely on; stirring occasionally. Stir in the spices and garlic, cooking for a further 2-3 minutes, stirring. Don't let it burn.

Add in the vegetables and chickpeas, along with tomato puree, chopped tomatoes, preserved lemon juice and skin, and up to 100 ml of  water, if you think it needs it (end result of stew should be thick with a bit of sauce). Bring up to the boil and then turn down to a very gentle simmer. Cover and leave for about 45 minutes. Do not peek more than once as the steam holds flavours that build up and drip down, helping to make this dish so tender, tasty and melt-in-your mouth. Season to taste after it cools down a bit.

Make up the couscous at the end of the stew's cooking time. The stew should be left for the flavours to develop as it cools a little. It actually (as with most stews) tastes better the next day. The tagine freezes well too.

The Couscous: Add 100g of dried couscous, ½ tsp of salt and a handful of snipped dried apricots (unsulphured if possible) to a wide-ish bowl and pour over 225ml of just- boiled water and 1 tsp of good extra virgin olive oil. Cover with some cling film and leave for 10 minutes. Add another 2 tsp of good extra virgin olive oil, or a knob of butter, and fluff with a fork. Couscous is quick and easy to make when the stew is finished simmering and is coming down to a manageable temperature. Serve a big ladle of tagine onto a smaller spoon of couscous and top with shredded mint.

For a bit of authenticity serve the stew and couscous with large Romaine lettuce leaves. Plop a bit of both into a leaf and roll up like a tortilla. Add a dash of harissa paste if you desire a bit more heat (a Moroccan spiced chilli paste).

Serves 6 (freezes well)

Energy Healing for Families with Kelly Goetz

Tuesday, February 7th, 7pm

Kelly Goetz will be focusing on Eden Energy Medicine.  During this interactive gathering, she will teach the daily energy routine or exercises around calming the nervous system/fight, flight, freeze response, or creating more focus.

After a short overview of what Energy Medicine is, Kelly will use Kinesiology and ask to test different ladies then guide everyone through the exercise that would support that individual, as well as the rest of the group.  What we learn intellectually and experience will give everyone an opportunity to retain it and use it at home with our kids.

For example, Kelly might ask if anyone ever feels scrambled.  We will test the appropriate person then lead everyone through the exercise.  In essence it will be a group mini session.

Our kids tend to reflect the energy of where we are at.  They usually shift quickly, so to educate and heal the mother, heals the child so to speak.  We will walk away with tools we can put into action right away.

Meeting Location:  The Health Doctors, Ltd., 28379 Davis Parkway, Suite 803, Warrenville, Illinois 60555
