I've been a member for 2 months
I am a holistic mom because: Unfortunately, I've lived and learned at how mainstream medicine has failed me on multiple occasions. And how toxic our world has become. I also realize now that my 2 children have autoimmune problems just like I do and that we don't handle chemicals in our environment, foods, or vaccines very well. As a result, I have learned to be an informed health 'consumer' in order to best take care of my health and my family's health. Over 15 years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Reactive Arthritis and informed I would have to be on an immunosuppressant drug, such as Humira, for the rest of my life. Prior to having a name for my condition, I ended up in the ER two times, only to be given steroids and sent home with a clean bill of health. Once I was officially diagnosed and put on immunosuppressants, my Rheumatologist never talked about the importance of diet and nutrition in managing the condition. I thank Dr Google for opening my eyes to this! After 2-years on both Humira and Prednisone, I learned that Humira was causing people extreme side effects, including cancer, so I started researching alternative modalities. I weened myself off of Humira and was able to calm my system through diet and supplements. I was excited to tell my Rheumatologist about my success and research. Needless to say, he wasn't intrigued. He simply said that it is normal for a person to go into remission after a couple of years. I still struggle with my autoimmune challenges, but I know my body so much better now and am better prepared to help my children without resorting to pharmaceuticals as a first line of defense. I rely on chiropractic care, acupuncture, infrared sauna, colonics, essential oils, massage, detoxing, supplements, homeopathy, and a good diet to improve my health. Even my kids get regular chiropractic care and my kids are well-versed about a healthy diet and the importance of good nutrition.
My holistic passions are:
I am extremely passionate about the importance of regular detoxing our bodies to thrive in this chemical soup of a world we live in today. I am also passionate about healthy diet and nutrition. I generally eat low carb, dairy free, and try my best to eat gluten free.
What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?
My kids! I want them to understand that what they feed their bodies directly impacts their health and how they feel. When I was growing up, my parents just told me to eat my vegetables but didn't connect the dots as to how my food choices impacted my energy levels or illnesses. When my 8-year old now complains of a stomach ache or bloating, we talk about what she ate in the last 2 days and what she thinks could be the cause. She even has a food diary on her tablet. She has made the connection with food and how she feels, especially as it relates to sugar and dairy intake. She makes better food choices as a result. My 3-year old is learning about good nutrition as well now. What is your favorite healthy recipe?
Almond Butter Thai Quinoa Salad 3 cups cooked quinoa 1 cup broccoli florets, finely chopped 1/2 cup shredded carrot 1 cup red bell pepper, julienned and cut into 2-inch strips 1 cup shredded cabbage 2 green onions, finely chopped 1/4 cup peanuts, chopped (optional) Dressing 1/4 cup creamy almond butter (or peanut butter 1 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 1 tablespoon gluten-free tamari 1 tablespoon brown rice vinegar Juice of 1 lime 2 - 3 tablespoons water (to thin the dressing)
Instructions 1. Add all the salad ingredients into a large bowl, minus the broccoli and dressing. 2. If desired, gently steam the broccoli for 2 minutes (or 40 seconds in the microwave) and transfer to the salad bowl. Toss ingredients together to combine. (<-- this step is optional, you can also just eat it raw!) 3. Drizzle dressing over salad and toss again until everything is incorporated and evenly covered by the dressing. 4. Serve immediately or store in fridge and serve when desired. 5. Enjoy! |
