Monthly Chapter Meeting
Your Child's HolisticRx: Key components of healing and preventing chronic disease
Tuesday, January 5th, 2015
Dr. Saeed will talk about her healing journey with chronic disease. She is a board certified integrative holistic family physician in Illinois. She graduated residency in Family Medicine from South Bend, Indiana receiving the Resident Teacher Award by the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in 2010. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine and holds a Diploma in Homeopathy from the CEDH.

My Healing Journey
Before becoming a board-certified integrative holistic family physician and health coach to thousands, I was an overweight and unhealthy child. Born and raised in Illinois and completed residency in South Bend, Indiana, after which, I joined Physicians HolisticHealth Alliance. There, I witnessed firsthand the struggles each patient suffered to heal their underlying issues, and their frustration on where to begin to help heal their issues. With my team at PHA, which included a nutritionist, psychotherapist, exercise physiologist, chiropractor, acupuncturist and other board certified physicians, I was determined to get to the root cause of disease for each patient and myself. After researching hundreds of holistic books/publications from the top professionals, with hundreds of success stories in all her patients and experiencing firsthand the power of healing as I lost 50 pounds, beat hypothyroidism, eczema, sebhorrheic dermatitis, acne, fatigue, alopecia, muscle/joint pain, weight and digestive issues, all with balancing a growing family and work! My enthusiasm for holistic health continues to grow and thrive. Years of study and interactions with patients have transformed my life as a doctor and coach to people with chronic conditions. In 2015, I moved to my home town where I continues my passion at Prairie Trail Family Medicine, Aurora, Illinois. Everything I prescribe, she have painstakingly researched and lived!

Meeting Location:  The Health Doctors, Ltd., 28379 Davis Parkway, Suite 803, Warrenville, Illinois 60555

How long have you been a member of HMN?
I have been a member for about 2 years. We moved here from Minneapolis three years ago. I wasn't a part of the group up there, but we had many "like-minded" friends so there wasn't a need. Not knowing anyone around us here in IL, it was great to join this group to not feel all alone in this lifestyle!

I am a Holistic Mom because:
Long before we had kids, my husband was experiencing some health problems that several medical doctors could not figure out the cause. He started researching, going to nutrition seminars, and seeing a chiropractor. He did a detox program that was life changing and then of course I did it as well and we have never looked back. So, when we got pregnant with our first son it was already our lifestyle and have raised our boys just the same. As you all know, once you have kids you do more and more research which has led us to live an even more holistic lifestyle.

My holistic passions are:
Healthy eating. We are a gluten free and dairy free family (and mostly soy and corn free too), so I love looking up new recipes to try. We also don't cook/bake with any refined sugar, so I love finding new recipes so we don't feel like we are missing out on "treats"! Other passions include chiropractic care, natural childbirth, vaccination choice, non-toxic cleaning, essential oils and other natural and alternative remedies, and I'm sure there are many more that I can't think of right now!

What inspires you about holistic moms or holistic living?
It's been so great to meet so many knowledgeable women in this group. I am constantly learning something new with all the new posts and questions that get asked. It's great to research topics on your own, but it is also so helpful when you are part of a group that has done some of the research already and can help educate you, and/or give you resources that save some time!

One of my favorite healthy recipes:

Here are two....One Side dish that we love and a delicious cake :)

Wild-Style Salad

Ingredients for the salad:
1 cup wild rice, rinsed & soaked overnight in the fridge
1 red pepper-diced (I do red and yellow bc it looks so pretty with the other colors)
1/4 cup carrots
1/2 cup celery
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup thinly sliced scallions
1/2 cup cashews, chopped
-combine wild rice with 3 cups water in a medium saucepan over high heat. Bring to boil and then reduce heat to low and cover, simmer for 30 minutes, or until all the water is absorbed.
-remove from heat, transfer to strainer, and rinse with cold water.
-chop all veggies while rice is cooking.
Ingredients for the dressing:
3 TBS apple cider vinegar
1 TBS fresh lemon juice
2 tsp dijon mustard
1 tsp pure maple syrup
1 garlic clove, minced
2 TBS fresh parsley, chopped
1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Sea salt & Pepper to taste
(I actually double the dressing recipe, because I like there to be more on it)
-Combine all ingredients, mix really well and then pour the dressing over the rice and veggies. Toss well. Refrigerate for an hour before serving so all flavors combine.

Gluten Free Chocolate Cake

 Ingredients:
  • ¾ cup coconut flour
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp celtic sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 10 eggs
  • 1 cup grapeseed oil or coconut oil
  • 1 ½ cup honey or real maple syrup
  • 1 tbls vanilla
  • ¼  tsp orange zest (optional)
Directions:
In small bowl combine the flour, cocoa, salt, and baking soda.  In large bowl, mix eggs, oil, honey/maple syrup, vanilla, and orange zest with a hand-mixer.  Add dry ingredients to large bowl and continue to blend until smooth.  Oil 2 - 9 inch pans with coconut oil and powder with flour.  Pour batter in pans evenly and bake on 325 for 35-40 minutes.  Put frosting in between cakes and then frost entire outside of cake.  Keep refrigerated when not serving or eating. For cupcakes bake at 325 for around 16-18 minutes.

As holistic moms, we know the value of self-care.   But do you ever feel like you could use a boost, or have you been just dealing with something so long you barely pay attention any more? Are you ready to make YOU a priority in the new year?

Let Amy Rieselman take care of you! As a licensed acupuncturist and board certified Chinese herbalist, Amy will use ancient diagnostic methods to peer inside your body to find imbalances, before or after symptoms arise. We all know that symptoms often manifest after problems have been brewing below the surface for months or years. Chinese medicine emphasizes finding our internal imbalances so that health can naturally be restored.  Also with Amy you'd have an added benefit of someone who is also knowledgeable about functional medicine - the best of east meets west.

For the remainder of the winter season (now through March 19), Amy is offering 40% off the first visit for new HMN patients. Call Northstar Integrated Health at 630-795-1889 for an appointment or check out www.amyrieselman.com .
