Monthly Chapter Meeting
Exploring Informed Consent in Vaccination: An Introduction to an Independent
Physician's Evidence-Based Perspective for Parents and Professionals
February, January 2nd, 2016
Presented by: David W. Miller, M.D., FAAP, L.Ac., Dipl. OM

Join us for an introductory exploration of complex issues surrounding vaccination. Dr. Miller will address both the positive potential of vaccination, as well as conflicts of interest in vaccine manufacturing and approval, adjuvants, how vaccine schedules have changed over the years, and questions of ethics surrounding mandatory vaccination.   The information will not serve as individual medical advice.

It is a fundamental tenet of medical care in a free society, that a patient be informed of the risks and benefits of any procedure which is to be done to them or to those for whom they are consenting, prior to receiving that intervention.  Informed consent demands that patients truly be given all information relevant to their decision making process, and that the information not be skewed or biased.  It also demands that they not be forcibly coerced to accept or reject the intervention.  This talk will begin to explore complex issues surrounding the practice of vaccination, and is an attempt to look at the potential for true informed consent for this most common of medical procedures.

Meeting Location:  The Health Doctors, Ltd., 28379 Davis Parkway, Suite 803, Warrenville, Illinois 60555

How long have you been a member of HMN?
I just became a member in January 2015

I am a Holistic Mom because:
I know there is more to taking care of ourselves, each other and our world than what we are led to believe by mainstream medicine and culture.  Being part of a group of like-minded parents gives me the reassurance that I'm not alone (or crazy!) in my beliefs and healthy living goals for myself and my family.  This group has been such a wonderful support and valuable resource!

My holistic passions are:
Healthy eating, living a toxin-free life, mindfulness, natural pregnancy and birth, breastfeeding, gentle parenting, and I love learning about alternatives to modern medicine such as herbs, homeopathy, essential oils, etc.

What inspires you about holistic moms or holistic living?
I love knowing that I am able to take charge and be in control of my lifestyle, and the more I learn, the more I am confidently able to make choices that I know will benefit me and my family.  I am truly humbled (and completely impressed!) by the knowledge and passion of everyone in this group!  I am a family nurse practitioner, my schooling and training should have prepared me to feel confident in making healthy/healthful choices for my family (don't get me wrong, I believe there is a time and a place for modern medicine), but ironically, I feel better prepared to support our well-being since I've transitioned to a more holistic lifestyle.  The most inspiring part of this group and knowing that so many families are passionate about and dedicated to holistic living is that we are part of a movement that is (hopefully!) changing the tides...we are raising a generation that will be more health conscious, more in touch with their bodies and the world around them, more present in the day-to-day goings on, and more willing to go against the grain, speak up for what they believe to true, and be their own advocates.

One of my favorite healthy recipes:

No Bake Power Balls

So easy!  The kids love them, and I can't keep my husband away from them!

Prep:10 mins Total:10 mins
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup (dry) oatmeal (I used old-fashioned oats)
  • 2/3 cup toasted coconut flakes
  • 1/2 cup almond butter
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seed
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or cacao nibs (optional)
  • (I've also done 1/4cup choc chip and 1/4 cup dried cranberries!)
  • 1/3 cup honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
  1. Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Cover and let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour.
  2. Once chilled, roll into balls of whatever size you would like. (Mine were about 1" in diameter.) Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week.
  3. Makes about 20-25 balls.

Find your center amid the chaos!
Motherhood is the most rewarding
and yet challenging job there is. Being
"on the path" is a fulfilling experience,
but when little ones come along, your world is completely changed! How can you "get your spiritual groove back" while feeding little mouths and washing dozens of onesies?

A Guru in the Nursery is a follow-up to A Guru in the Office, in which author Dawn M. Staszak tackled the challenge of bridging the gap between business and spirituality. In A Guru in the Nursery, Staszak tackles the challenge of being on the spiritual path while caring for little ones. Motherhood is always an adventure, and these ideas and activities have helped her get back to center and feel more peaceful, thereby giving her a leg up on being a better mom-and isn't that what every parent strives for?

When you don't have time to shower, much less attend life-enhancing seminars, A Guru in the Nursery is your go-to guide for sanity-saving tips and tricks to bring you back to the best parent you can be.

Namaste, Mama!
