| Monthly Chapter Meeting Neurodevelopmental Optometry | Good Seeing + Hearing is NOT equal to Good Performance!! Join us and learn about The Mind-Eye Connection with Optometrist, Deborah Zelinsky. Dr. Zelinsky emphasizes neuro-developmental concepts in her optometric testing and is the developer of a patented method to assess visual and auditory integration. Conventional eye examinations are designed to test central eyesight. In the 21st century, using 20/20 is an archaic way to determine whether or not a child can function well in a classroom. New research shows that comprehension is affected by eye/ear connections. Just because a child can see and hear well does NOT mean that they are using their eyes and ears together as a team--even if they measure 20/20 eyesight. Your hearing system is different than your listening system. If your child has perfect hearing, but you feel like he/she doesn't listen to you, the reason might surprise you. These are all interrelated. Issues that can be caused by brain-eye disharmony: * Some types of anxiety * Sensory issues - sounds, noises, sights, lights, smells, textures and tastes can create a feeling of "sensory overload," or the opposite, known as "sensory seeking" of pressure, firm contact, etc. * Learning and attention problems * Social Skills * Neuro-developmental delays including speech, sitting up, crawling, holding things, tantrums and diagnoses such as Autism (ASD) * Neuro-degenerative conditions such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. * Head trauma including concussions and traumatic brain injuries * Poor hand-eye coordination in writing or sports Participants will learn why: * The eye is a gateway to brain function * 20/20 should be left in the 20th century * 21st century eye care should include glasses for peripheral processing * Solid eye/ear connections are necessary for learning and social skills Dr. Zelinsky tests and treats peripheral eyesight using prescriptions designed to synchronize auditory and visual inputs. You CAN change the way that the vision system and listening system work together! There IS a mind-eye connection. Deborah Zelinsky, O.D., F.N.O.R.A., F.C.O.V.D. is an active member of the World Brain Mapping Foundation and a community leader for the Society for Neuroscience. She has spent the past thirty years of her optometric career developing methods for assessment of brain function with emphasis on the often untested linkage between eyes and ears. The 21st century technological advancements use peripheral eyesight differently than in the 19th century, when the concept of 20/20 measurements to standardize central eyesight was developed. Dr. Zelinsky is spearheading a campaign to "Leave 20/20 in the 20th Century", because it is no longer sufficient in lens prescribing. Her patented research in novel usages of retinal stimulation has been described in neuro-optometric rehabilitation publications and courses worldwide. Along with Donalee Markus, Ph.D, Dr. Zelinsky is featured in the 2015 book "The Ghost in My Brain: How a Concussion Stole My Life and the New Science of Brain Plasticity Brought it Back" by Dr. Clark Elliott (www.clarkelliott.com). She is also cited in the afterword of Norman Doidge's 2015 New York Times Best Seller, "The Brain's Way of Healing." Research interests include conditions where auditory and visual pathways are out of synch, such as in dyslexia, neurodegenerative conditions, brain injury and autism. Her collective findings demonstrate how many people who have 20/20 eyesight still need lenses to alter internal comfort, rather than external eyesight. Meeting Location: Four Winds Waldorf School | Member Highlight Janice Joerges | How long have you been a member of HMN? I joined HMN in November of 2017 after meeting a member at a screening of Just One Drop.
I am a holistic mom because:
Eleven years ago I was pregnant with my oldest child and I knew I didn't want the standard medical approach. I was able to find an incredible midwife and also a very nurturing doula. They opened my eyes to the world of natural medicine, and I fell head over heels. My son was unable to latch after birth, but I was determined to breastfeed so we met with an IBCLC, used craniosacral therapy, and after 2 weeks he was feeding full-time at the breast. He also responded well to homeopathy and we started seeing an upper cervical chiropractor after he got an ear infection. All three of my children had food intolerances, so I was able to see how instrumental elimination diets can be in improving overall health. Thankfully, my oldest 2 children have since outgrown their sensitivities, and my youngest is now only intolerant of dairy. I have dermagraphic urticaria and I have been under the care of a naturopathic doctor for several years. While I am not completely healed, I have seen major improvements.
I have a strong intuition and I allow it to help guide my decisions as a wife, mother, student, and friend. We support and appreciate our immune systems, we spend time connecting with nature, we seek out true joy in life, and we share our skills and talents with those around us.
My holistic passions are: homeopathy, breastfeeding, naturopathic medicine, Sudbury schools, exercise, and respectful parenting.
What inspires you about HMN or holistic living? I learn so many new treatment modalities! HMN helps me to increase my knowledge and expand my awareness. It is comforting to be part of a group that is full of generous, thoughtful, and like-minded women. One of my favorite healthy recipes: Spiralized Zucchini Puttanesca 2 large zucchini, spiralized Puttanesca sauce: 3TBS extra-virgin olive oil 1 yellow onion (diced) Pinch Himalayan pink sea salt 3 cloves garlic (minced) 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved 2TBS capers, rinsed 1/4 cup Kalamata olives, chopped 1/4cup grated Parmesan 1/4 cup freshly chopped basil Add olive oil to a large skillet over medium heat. As the oil heats add the onions, salt, and garlic and sauté for 2 or 3 minutes until the onions are translucent. Add the tomatoes, capers, and olives and cook for 2 more minutes. Add the zucchini spirals into the skillet and toss for 2 minutes, or until the zucchini is al dente. Add the cheese and chopped basil and toss it until it is combined. |

| Who I am: Hi! For those who don't know me, I'm Amy Cohn Rieselman, and I'm a licensed acupuncturist and board certified Chinese herbalist with a practice in Naperville called Energy Flow Health. A bit about what I do: I partner with my patients to find the underlying imbalances manifesting in various symptoms such as menstrual problems, digestion issues, anxiety, insomnia, and pain. Why consider Chinese Medicine? This system of medicine is comprehensive, time-tested, safe, natural, and effective. How does it work? Acupuncture works by unobstructing blockages to your body's own natural energy to flow smoothly along the many major and minor energy channels traversing the body. With herbs I will customize a formula of plant, mineral, and sometimes animal substances (veganism accommodated) in an easy to take tea to treat internal imbalances in the organ systems of the body. What are my patients saying? "I'm so grateful for you and so glad I found you when I did!" -E.D. "In the past going on a trip and off my routine would have set me off and my anxiety would have been sky high, but after our work together, it was really smooth and I adjusted better than I'd have thought I could!" -R.S. Any offers for HMN members? Of course! I offer a new patient exam discount for HMN members and families (yep I can treat the littles too). Give me a call to see if we'd be a fit!
