Naperville renews contract despite moratoriums in other communities |
The Naperville City council reminded citizens that they made the decision to deploy 57,000 wireless smart meters long before current discussions with the public had taken place. On November 1st, the council voted to renew the contract with West Monroe Partners (WMP), the technical advisors to the smart meter deployment. The amount awarded was $1.45 million. WMP has no previous smart meter deployment experience.
The decision was once again met with opposition as members of the community spoke out about their concerns with the renewal of this contract and the entire smart meter project.
"In the Illinois Public Utilities Act, Public Utilities Regulatory Policies Act and the Energy Act of 2005 there is nothing that states this is a mandatory program. According to these documents, this is an opt-in program. The way it is being marketed is as a mandated project. That is misleading to the public," stated Bendis.
