 | Naperville City Council votes to take your money and take your choice away. |
City council members have sent a very clear message to Naperville residents in last Tuesday's council meeting.
That message..."We don't care what you think! We don't care what you want!"
Members of the community flooded the council chambers for Tuesday's council meeting in opposition, not only to the $24.75 per month pentaly fee for those who want to "opt-out" but also to show their non-support for the installation of smart meters in Naperville.
At first, the council voted to reduce the 3 minute limit per speaker to 1.5 minutes and then they took a 10 minute recess as a vocal crowd spoke out about the council decision to install smart meters in Naperville without a referendum. The council later agreed to allow residents to take their 3 minute limit but ordered several residents escorted out of chambers when they spoke up, citing it as a form of intimidation.
Intimidation? Shall we revisit the last several months of council meetings? Shall we revisit former councilmen attacking residents and current councilmen name calling and belittling residents that express their concerns?
Among the speakers were accountant Bill Eagen who offered a reasonable solution to this debacle and a cost effective option to the council, while showing them the flaws in the business case.
Resident Amanda Rykov, who resides is a townhome which she owns, was told that she and all residents who reside in townhomes or condominiums have no protection under the work around the city has proposed. Even if Amanda is willing to pay for the non-wireless work around meter, the remaining meters for her building sit on the wall adjacent to her couch. If the other residents don't take or can't afford to take the work around, she is out of luck.
Mike Costello of Energy Solutions of Illinois stated that smart meters are "not a good effective energy conservation method." Mike holds an AAS in Building and Energy Management.
The council heard from a resident in Naperville that is electro sensitive as a result of a compromised immune system after having contracted Lyme disease in Naperville. She pays extensive out of pocket costs to treat this disease and will now be forced to pay $24.75 per month to protect her from radiation that she won't actually be protected from if all her neighbors have wireless transmitting smart meters.
Doctors, business owners, concerned citizens. Resident after resident spoke and pleaded with the council to stop this initiative.
But to no avail. The council isn't listening. The council does not want to listen. Clearly, with the exception of Doug Krause, the council doesn't care.
They are willing to take your money. They are willing to take your choice. They are willing to put each resident and business owner and every child in our community at risk. Naperville residents were sent a deliberate message by the council as they approved the $24.75/month work around penalty.
That message was loud and clear: "We don't care!" Contact us to share your thoughts and your willingness to support the Naperville Smart Meter Awareness cause to stop smart meters in Naperville.
We will continue to petition the city to cease and desist this initiative. The DoE grant allows for a minimum one year extension and gives the city ample opportunity to get out of the contract.
