| Smart meters are touted as one of the necessary steps to providing customers control over their energy usage. Customers will be able to log onto an ePortal in order to see their current energy usage and make adjustments accordingly, according to city officials.
While logging onto an ePortal sounds cool, do you really want to add that to your task list?
Residents have told us, "It sounds cool, but really, I just want to know that when I need electricity, I have it. I don't want to have to pay attention to the time of day I use it and how much it will cost. When I think about it, it really is adding one more thing that I have to be concerned with during the day. And it doesn't seem the risks, outweigh the rewards."
A 12-month pilot study shows that smart meters "may not have much effect" on energy consumption. Accoring to the article, "Rather than feeling motivated to save more energy and money, householders were left feeling frustrated and despondent that the changes they could make were very small and they were receiving little or no meaningful support from anywhere else, such as government and local authorities." According to a recent Forbes article, the process of saving energy is even simpler and doesn't come with the reported risks associated with smart meters, nor the huge expense. Research has found that a 30% reduction in energy consumption is possible with some of the suggestions. Click here to read the article. |
