| Tuesday, November 6, 2012 7-9 PM Diet, Gut and Brain Connection | Many of us have experienced 'butterflies' in our stomach before giving a talk or taking a big exam. Our brain and gut are profoundly interconnected and influence each other in numerous ways. The gut is also referred to as the 'second brain' as it contains a large number of neurons and neurotransmitters. In fact, 95 percent of the body's serotonin is found in the gut. Food allergies, disruption of the gastrointestinal flora, and gastrointestinal malabsorption can affect our mood and behavior, while chronic stress can impact gastrointestinal health. These issues can often be addressed with proper testing, dietary changes, nutraceuticals, and herbs. Come and learn about the: ♦ Potential impact of imbalanced gut flora on mood and behavior ♦ Potential impact of food allergies and sensitivities on mood and behavior ♦ Impact of fatty acid imbalances and oxidative stress on brain health ♦ Connection between stress and gastrointestinal health

| | We'd like to thank Laura for 2 years of amazing leadership service. She has spear-headed leadership calls, kept us on task, organized many a chapter meetings (and led some herself) and with much professionalism, but always a warm heart, dealt with many trying and difficult situations when the need arose. She is above all, a loving mother, friend, wife, and caretaker who has brought so much to our chapter but alas, needs now to take care of herself, family and soon-to-come, holistic baby #2. Thank you for stepping up when the chapter needed you most, for helping to keep our chapter strong and for promising to continue to stay involved! We will miss your contagious laugh and smile during the leadership calls but wish you much luck with your expanding family. With lots of love, The Leadership Team

Member Profile
Debi Estopellan | How long have you been a member of HMN? One year this month. I used to go to the meetings more frequently when they were closer to home. I'm a Holistic Mom because: I just feel better about treating my family in this manner. I was first introduced to a more holistic approach when I learned about home births. I wanted to have my daughter at home, but she was in a frank breach position. Then I attempted to have my son at home, but his head would not engage, so off to C-section no. 2, I went. But at least I tried. I do believe home births have got to be the best way to deliver babies. I love the way I feel when I treat my children with supplements, tinctures, and home remedies. I never feel that way with Western medicine. I have surrounded myself with loving, caring practitioners including a chiropractor, naturopath, and lots of friends who share certain aspects of this lifestyle. My husband even suffered a stroke last year, and he (along with the Lord's help) has healed his own body through food and exercise. His is no longer on blood pressure medication or cholesterol medication, because of the healing abilities of his body. My holistic passions are: Supporting my breastfeeding step-daughter, and friends. Informing others about the dangers of vaccinations. Being willing to stand up for what our family believes in. Educating my children on how to cook healthy meals, and care for themselves in an alternative manner. What inspires me about Holistic Moms or holistic living? How powerful community can be when they pull together. How women can affect the world if they stand up and talk and share. The amazing healing abilities our bodies have if we treat them properly. One of my favorite healthy recipes: Pepperocini Roast in crock pot 4 pounds of Chuck Roast 1 large jar of pepperocini's add 1 extra jar of water (pepperocini jar) Cook on low for 7-8 hours. Serve with noodles or mashed potatoes. This is a slightly spicy dish. You can reduce the amount of pepperocinis, but not the amount of water. | Chapter Events and Activities
