Why are state regulators silent on ComEd "smart" meter fires?
|
September 10, 2012
When Commonwealth Edison Co. muscled its "smart grid" plan through the Illinois General Assembly last year-along with a hefty rate hike-skeptics like us wondered, "Where's the fire?" Now we know.
As Crain's Senior Reporter Steve Daniels wrote Aug. 30 on ChicagoBusiness.com, three suburban homes with recently installed smart meters have had "small fires." In addition, ComEd fessed up that 15 other smart meters in the area have exhibited "higher than normal heat conditions causing damage to the smart meter."
This is as much as we know about fire and overheating problems involving smart meters that the Chicago electric company has installed since 2009 because, well, that's all ComEd has revealed.
According to Mr. Daniels' article, ComEd reported a September 2010 fire to its overseers at the Illinois Commerce Commission, but regulators were not told of subsequent fires in 2011 and earlier this year, something ComEd said it was not required to disclose. Regardless, the ICC did nothing.
Things are different in Pennsylvania and Maryland, states where Exelon Corp.'s other utilities also are testing smart meters.
In Philadelphia, Peco Energy Co. has halted smart-meter installations while it investigates the cause of an Aug. 12 fire apparently linked to a meter as well as a dozen incidents of overheating.
And the Maryland Public Service Commission recently held a hearing where it learned of five cases of overheating meters installed by Baltimore Gas & Electric Co.
