Dear Friends and Neighbors:
Remember Cuba Gooding Jr.'s "Show Me the Money" scene in
Jerry McGuire?

$$$ Show Me the MONEY!!! $$$ |
City Manager Doug Krieger and the Naperville City Council continue to tout "smart" meters as being a green initiative with financial savings to the consumer.
Really?! I say... Show
me the money!
City officials never sought public input on this $22M+ expenditure. In fact, they barred ballot access so residents couldn't vote.
Now, Naperville taxpayers are on the hook for a minimum of $11 million (the other $11 million was a matching grant from the Feds).
However, when you add the interest on the bonds that were sold because, well, we didn't have that kind of cash just laying around,
the price tag went up another cool million.
Then, add the maintenance fees, software upgrades, and other unexpected costs, plus the expense of defending themselves against their own law-abiding residents in a Federal lawsuit and the
NSGI project is well over budget.
Not to mention that the utilities department is currently showing a deficit (See pg. 36 of the Financial Advisory Board Meeting Agenda from August 6, 2012)?
And who do you think is going to make up the difference? Us, through higher rates and/or fees via our electric bills.
The city blocked a referendum allowing residents to vote on this project and violated the IL Open Meetings Act in the process. This is illegal.
Americans all over the country are filing complaints of excessive bills with their utility companies. In fact, 3 Stanford college students received such an
outrageous electric bill they starting tracking their own usage. What did they find? PG&E was erroneously billing them.
Sound too remote to be true? Right here in Naperville residents are writing to the city and NSMA's website and lodging the same complaints. This is just one we have received:
"...I called the finance dept. and talked to Tony, He said they have had lots of complaints .... He said I could write it for 1/2 and then the rest couple weeks later. I'm a bit confused about the future. He said rates are flat right now but could change once all meters are installed by the end of the year. Seems unfair and I agree with your assessment about variable rates, don't like that idea because of what you mentioned in your email about people who are at home during the day. ... I have talked to 1 friend down the street and her bill went up but not as much as mine. Tony said if I ask again next month I could have someone come out and check my meter....?"
Who's making out here? Clearly not the consumer!
When over night, gas prices are reaching an all time high and the economy is still sluggish, we need to stand up and take back our power!
Continue to refuse Naperville's "smart" meters and hold the city accountable for this wasteful project that is costing the Naperville taxpayers untold millions.

You have the right to know and the right to say No!
We are committed to advocating for all Naperville residents to have the same benefits afforded to citizens in CA, NV, MI, MD, ME, HI and many other cities and states.
We can no longer afford to stand quietly on the sidelines.
Naperville: wake up, speak up and opt-out now!
Be Empowered, Be Engaged, Be Moved to Action,
