Time flies once we start talking, so honor your own time and bring yourself to this meeting. You'll be glad you joined in the discussion. How long have you been a member of HMN?    Since 2008

I'm a Holistic Mom because:   At 16 I got a pen pal from South Africa who is a homeopathic MD now. He convinced me to explore all sorts of ways to heal. While challenged with fertility issues, I got proof from Western MDs that the supplements my naturopath/midwive gave were working in a really powerful way.

My holistic passions are:  Spreading the word. At Isenberg & Associates in Naperville we use a number of holistic treatments for mental health that
other places either don't have people trained in or don't have so many options under one roof. In 1997 I was chosen to be on the first teaching panel when U of IL at Chicago offered their 1st class in CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine). I did the "How to TRY to get it Covered by Insurance," bit so recommend you ask your HR if Flex Funds or Medical Savings Accounts(MSAs) are available because both cover a lot that Blue Cross PPO doesn't or gives a yearly cap on for CAM.

MSAs are like tax-free ways to save for future health expenses. Rather than losing what you spend on insure premiums, you can have the $ compound in a medical-IRA & can take amounts out for all the same categories Flex-Funds cover (without use it or lose it by year-end). Then if something medical gets expensive you still have catastrophic high-deductible coverage. For everyday things you pick what to spend & can afford to be more preventative. Some families would have to price it out if they need regular services for chronic conditions.

Last week I gave a 3 hour continuing education talk to other psychotherapists & they were so excited to learn about ways to use CAM for mental health! We started by taking personality types & I found it interesting that out of the 10 people there,
5 of us (myself included) were ENFP types, "extraverted visionary creatives," since we are only 5% of the population. If there were more analytical people in the crowd I would have talked more about all the double-blind placebo controlled research behind various types of CAM.

I tried to write a balanced piece for a Neuropsychiatry continuing web ed piece, but there is so much impressive research on CAM for neurological things. We'll see
what my editor does with it, she told me to have "brief sections" for "novel treatments." For example neurofeedback can reverse all 7 signs of autism over 50%, yoga, tai chi, music lessons, meditation, brain supplements, acupuncture all have good
research now for the toughest conditions to treat- addiction, Parkinsons, MS, Alzheimers.

What inspires me about Holistic Moms or holistic living?  That it is getting more mainstream every year. Now so many restaurants even have vegetarian and gluten free options.

I remember around 1995 or 1996 I was in Wa DC to visit a friend and went into Congress to try to talk with my Congressperson about the Access to Medical Treatment Act which would have made it legal for NDs to be licensed in all states. I found a booklet where even lots of former Congresspeople who felt CAM saved their lives came to testify at these hearings. You never know where you can find people who are open to CAM. Netflix has a number of documentaries that are CAM friendly like Food, Inc. and Burzinski so even the media is opening up a bit.

1/4 c. unsweetened pumpkin pie filling
1-2 Tbsp any of these options- honey, agave or maple syrup
