"As a result of a lawsuit filed against the utility, Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) has announced that it will "indefinitely defer" smart meter installations for those who oppose the technology.
The complaint, which closely mirrors a similar action filed against the city of Naperville, Ill., cites security and privacy concerns as the basis for its action."

Kauai follows the lead of the United Kingdom, who has made the country's entire
smart meter program voluntary. The reasons they cite for their decision: customer push back in the US and Canada and a desire to avoid class action lawsuits. Additional articles can be found

It remains to be seen whether Naperville's local government will decide to
work with the people or continue to work against them by forcing the installation of smart meters (wireless or non-wireless) on every home in Naperville.
As these governments have recognized and protected the rights of their citizens to protect their personal property, Naperville's city council, city manager, and utility director remain stuck in their hard headed stance on forcing residents to comply.
