Next Month's Meeting - Tuesday, February 7, 2011 7-9 PM Nutritional Supplements: The "What, Why, and How" Criteria for Choosing the Best Products for your family
| This month's HMN evening meeting is sure to clarify the questions on the minds of parents who provide nutritional supplements for the entire family. It can be a daunting task to sort through the choices and marketing behind major and minor brands and recommendations we get from family and friends. Sometimes we plunk down a lot of money for vitamins, and we want to know the research behind the ingredients, the quality assurance, and any other claimed mystery in the marketing. So bring your list of current supplements and questions, as we will be able to compare brands, decipher some of the ingredients, and look at the safety measures behind what we select on those health food shelves. | Member Profile

How long have you been a member of HMN? 8 months approx. In Michigan before I moved to Naperville I was active in many very similar groups for several years. It took me awhile to get acclimated and venture out since moving to Naperville. I am still continuing to make an effort to attend more HMN events/ meetings. With 3 small children and a husband who works long hours it can be difficult, but I am looking forward to meeting everyone in the near future. I am grateful for this group. I'm a Holistic Mom because: I wanted healthy, happy vibrant children. I always say "The proof is in the pudding". My children were given chiropractic adjustments minutes after birth and weekly thereafter, breastfed for years and eat an impeccable whole foods organic diet. Obviously they have never been given a drug of any kind and I am proud to say my children have never had a single ear infection, diarrhea, cradles cap/ skin issues, asthma, influenza.....they have each had a few mild runny noses and that is it. I don't use hand sanitizer, they eat food off the floor, play in every germ laden jungle gym in Naperville and people think I'm insane, but my girls have rock solid immune systems thanks to living holistically. People always tell me how "lucky" I am. I am always full of gratitude for my family's health, but I don't believe in luck. I believe in choices (being educated- because if you don't know your options you don't have any) and the outcomes those choices produce. My holistic passions are: Chiropractic, natural childbirth, breastfeeding, attachment and mindful parenting, cloth diapering, avoiding drugs/ toxins/ chemicals in my family's diet and environment to the best of my ability. My husband and I have a chiropractic office in Naperville and I am a natural childbirth educator and counselor. We spend our days educating and healing others naturally and we feel it is a privilege and joy to watch others heal and find happiness through holistic living. What inspires me about Holistic Moms or holistic living? Being able to live life and make choices that allow the body to heal itself and function at 100%. I love the idea that I can choose to be healthy and have given my children the gift of health through breastfeeding, diet, chiropractic care and holistic living. I don't need drugs or surgery and I am full of energy, vitality, happiness and gratitude. I was inspired to begin living holistically when I became pregnant with my first child six years ago. I began to question the germ theory, vaccinations, infant formula, Tylenol.... Everything that I had known. My paradigm began to shift and I began researching and reading with every free second I had. Americans spend the most on healthcare, take the most drugs yet we rank as one of the sickest nations in the world. I knew something was very wrong, with the lifestyle of most Americans. I had suffered with depression, anxiety, mood swings, acne and other skin issues, lethargy ...to name a few. As soon as I began to live holistically I was healed naturally. One of my favorite healthy recipes: I have a sweet tooth but avoid processed foods, grains and sugar as much as possible. On occasion I do bake goodies and attempt to make them as healthy as possible. Here is an awesome Paleo Brownie recipe: ½ cup coconut oil (solid) ½ cup good quality cocoa powder ½ tsp ground cinnamon ½ cup coconut milk 2 tbs local raw honey 1 egg 1 cup almond meal Good quality cocoa powder to dust (optional) Instructions Preheat a fan-forced oven to 160° Celsius/325° Fahrenheit. Place the coconut oil, cocoa powder and cinnamon in a bowl and combine well. Add the coconut milk, honey, egg and almond meal and mix until combined. Line a small brownie tin or cake loaf tin with baking paper. Spoon the brownie mixture into the tin and smooth the surface of the mixture. Place in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove and allow to cool to room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator for 60 minutes. Dust the brownie with cocoa and cut into individual portions to serve. | | | Advertisement Hobson Cooperative is focused on teaching the whole child Equal emphasis is placed on social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth.
