Tips for Outdoor Winter Fun!
Tuesday, January 3, 2011  7-9 PM
Make friends with Old Man Winter!

A wise friend once told me that going outside a little each day in winter made her increasingly ABLE to go outside a little each day in winter. And our kids love it outside no matter what! So let's get together and share our ideas about what we do to get outside, break out of our winter rut, and play!

Connie Sirota, a naturalist at the Hidden Oaks Nature Center, will give us some tips on where to go, what to do, and how to make your outdoor time so special that you'll actually choose to go out! Let's try to raise children who root for snow and winter weather when they grow up...

See you there!

How long have you been a member of HMN?   I was lucky to find the group when we moved to the area in Spring 2010!

I'm a Holistic Mom because:  I want to raise children who are mindful, compassionate, and respectful- to their own health, to others, and to the Earth.

My holistic passions are:   This is a journey for us so I'm always trying to research more, learn more, and decide what things are right for our family. But, the one thing we've always agreed on even before we began our holistic journey was keeping our family connected with nature. I feel like it's more important than ever with the rate our society is changing, and I pray that this is the one ideal that our family never loses sight of!

What inspires me about Holistic Moms or holistic living?  Well, the women in this group are some of the most intelligent, well-read, well-researched women I've ever met, and they always inspire me to never stop searching for answers!

A favorite recipe of Alison's....

RED QUINOA WALNUT COOKIES

2 1/2 c. whole wheat flour

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp aluminum-free baking powder

3/4 tsp fine-grain sea salt

1 c. unsalted butter, at room temperature

2 cups natural cane sugar

3 large eggs

3 tsp pure vanilla extract

2 c. cooked red quinoa

3/4 c. chopped toasted walnuts

1 c. rolled oats

Preheat the oven to 375 F, position the racks in the upper half of the oven, and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a bowl and whisk to combine.

In a separate large bowl or stand mixer, cream the butter until light and fluffy, then beat in the sugar. Mix in the eggs one at a time, incorporating each fully before adding the next and scraping down the sides of the bowl a few times. Stir in the vanilla until evenly incorporated. Add the flour mixture in about 4 increments stirring between each addition. At this point, you should have a moist, uniform dough. Stir in the quinoa, walnuts, and oats and mix only until the quinoa is evenly distributed.

Drop 2 tablespoon s of the dough on the prepared baking sheets for each cookie. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until golden on both top and bottom.

Hobson Cooperative is focused on teaching the whole child

Equal emphasis is placed on social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth. The learning environment is rich with hands on experiences in the classroom and in Hobson's " backyard". Our director and teachers not only have a deep understanding of early childhood development, but also have the experience needed to guide young children in the learning process.

As a co-op we enjoy the benefits of parent participation in the classroom and in running the school. Hobson is a wonderful choice for your child's first school experience and is a welcoming community for your family. We invite you to call and schedule a time to observe our classroom.
