Local Update & Action Items:

We have heard from many of you recently that you want to know more of what can be done on a local level.  We want to assure you that NSMA is actively working with organizations and individuals, both locally & nationally, to effect change in smart grid policy.

Federal Case Update:
We are awaiting word from the Federal Judge regarding the Federal Lawsuit.  The city has petitioned, once again, to have the case dismissed. Please check our website regularly for the latest information. If the case is not dismissed, we will be heading to trial.

Additional donations are currently needed and will be necessary to enter the trial phase of the lawsuit.  Please click here to donate.

Update on Jen & Kim:
Regarding the arrests of Kim and Jen.  Both have appeared in court and entered their pleas of not guilty.  The city had the opportunity to dismiss charges but has chosen not to do so. Click here for NC17 report.

Action Item:
Keeping this issue in the forefront of the city council is the best thing that our supporters can do at this time.

Attending city council meetings, reporting any health issues and forwarding emails to the city council asking for a no-cost analog ordinance will help to ensure that the city knows residents remain concerned and the issue will not go away.

Emails for the city council can be found here.

After buying the test samples through online auction sites, Jones wanted to find out what made the electronics tick. He said he discovered the protection against hardware tampering was far less stringent than that applied to comparable consumer security products, such as an Xbox game console.

"Smart meters are essentially crap computers in a crap box," Jones claimed.

FOX 5 Investigates: Smart meters spark controversy
May 13, 2013

Electric companies do a bait and switch.
Your analog meter may not be safe.

Millions of homes now have smart meters and if you don't have one yet, you probably will.

Power companies are swapping out old meters -- for newer "smart" versions. The devices allow utilities to read your meter wirelessly without sending a meter reader.

But opposition is growing here and across the country warning of health and safety concerns. Some smart meters have overheated and caught fire.

"I was walking to the seventh tee, when the pro came up and said, 'Jump in the car. We just got a call. Your house is on fire," Michael Capetto said.

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is a non-profit 501(c)(4) group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.

Smart meters are currently being installed in Naperville despite a complaint for federal injunction and on-going investigations by the Illinois Attorney General for Open Meetings Act violations by the City of Naperville in conjunction with this project.

Smart meters pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, safety and health and are not a federally mandated program. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.
