Smart Meter Awareness Groups Calls on

Governments to Stop the Bullying

NAPERVILLE, Ill., -- The non-profit citizen group Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is joining forces with other anti-smart meter groups across the country in a call to local and state governments to stop the bullying of forced smart meter installations.

NSMA has been advocating for freedom of choice regarding smart meters in Naperville since February 2011.

Since the group was formed, opposition throughout the country has grown, with more than 30% of states in the country having groups opposed to the mandatory install of smart meters.

In recent months, California has secured an official opt out program, which follows on the heels of Maine. Michigan has issued several moratoriums on smart meter deployment until more information is known about their effects. Nevada has also launched an investigation. And the UK has officially made their program voluntary, citing customer pushback in Canada and the US and the desire to circumvent multi-million dollar class action lawsuits as the reasons.

Additionally, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine has issued a strong statement regarding the public health risks of the wireless smart meters and are urging utilities to place a moratorium on them until more is known.

NSMA is calling for all Naperville residents, business owners and concerned citizens in neighboring communities to join them and wear blue to show support for residents right to choose whether a smart meter is installed on their property.

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is 501(c)6 non-profit group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.

Smart meters are currently being installed in Naperville despite a request for federal injunction and on-going investigations by the Illinois Attorney General into Open Meetings Act Violations by the City of Naperville in conjunction with this project. Smart meters pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, and health and are not federally mandated. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.
