Entire Streets are Delaying Smart Meter Installations
Dear Smart Meter Awareness:

The UPA guys came by my street today - I told them our whole street had called in and delayed install - BUT - just so you know - some people called in yesterday  - and he still had tags to change them out anyway - probably the tags were printed before their calls were processed, so if I hadn't been there to stop him - he wouldve installed them.

You should urge people to PUT a sign on their meter - Even if they a delayed install appt. because that is a false sense of security.

The man was decent - not threatening - he is knocking on everyone's door. If you're home and you say you don't want it - he gently tries to persuade (he is handing out fliers) and then will leave without threatening.

If he knocks and you don't answer - he will replace your meter UNLESS you have a note on it DO NOT INSTALL.  He said they are respecting people's choice so put a DO NOT sign up  - at least now.  So for people that work - the DO NOT sign is imperative.

I saw a few tags around the neighborhood from people that told me they called for a delayed install. They have their bright green tag left on their door and a new meter installed.

Keep up the Great Work!

Steps to take:

1. Call  United Partners of America (UPA), the city's contracted installers, at (877) 423-3194.  Say you want to be installed last.  Get date and time. Get name of person speaking to.  (This will put you later in the install period.)

Do NOT agree to "work around" meter unless you are willing to accept one and pay the punitive costs.

2.  Post Do Not Install Notice:  Post this sign next to your doorbell or on your front door.  Give some to your neighbors to post.

3. Send the utility a Notice of No Consent:  Click here. This document contains instructions with the letter to fill out and sign, then send via certified mail.

4. Apply a "DO NOT INSTALL SMART METER" sticker on your electrical box.  Mail a $4 donation check along with your address made to

What you can do
Many residents do not want a smart meter installed on their home.  They want the choice and according to the U.S. Constitution and the Energy Policy Act of 2005, we have that right. The city has denied its residents the choice.

According to the city you will have opportunities to refuse the wireless smart meter, but you must sign up for the non-wireless alternative and pay the monthly penalty fee to protect your home and family. If after the 3rd attempt to install a meter on your home, and you have not signed up for the alternative, the city says it will bring a police escort to your home to intimidate you into allowing the installation of the wireless smart meter.

We feel this is outrageous. There must be something serious wrongly with smart meters if the city has to threaten you to install one.

Naperville Smart Meter Awareness is a group of concerned citizens educating the public about the risks of wireless smart meters. We are comprised of lawyers, technology professionals, health advocates, accountants, business owners and parents in our community.

Smart meters are currently being installed in Naperville despite a complaint for federal injunction and on-going investigations by the Illinois Attorney General for Open Meetings Act violations by the City of Naperville in conjunction with this project.

Smart meters pose risks in the areas of privacy, costs, security, and health and are not a federally mandated program. Our mission is to educate the residents of Naperville by bringing all pertinent information to the public and in doing so, advocate for a smarter solution in Naperville.
