MEET ONE OF YOUR LEADERS!

JENNIFER STAHL

How long have you been a member of HMN?
I've been a member of our Western Suburbs chapter for 10 years or so, non-stop since a little after the chapter started.

I am a holistic mom because:
"When you know better, you do better" - Maya Angelou
I started on my holistic journey when I was trying to conceive our first child, who is now 14 years old.  The OB prescribed some meds and she would only give me 1 month's prescription.  I was perturbed and inquisitive, so I read the package insert.  The risks were pretty steep and I didn't want to take that path again.  I researched fertility and we successfully and naturally conceived.  The path continued and was locked in when I read a great article describing childbirth classes options.  We attended a Bradley Method class and learned so many new things.  I kept thirsting for more since it just felt like the right path to take.  Three children later, an holistic lifestyle is one of my primary values.

My holistic passions are:
Homeopathy, Energy and alternative medicine, Organic and clean whole foods, Informed Consent, and Mindfulness

What inspires you about HMN or holistic living?
HMN inspires and supports me most because it is a community where you can be comfortable being who you are without having to explain yourself all the time. Everyone knows that we are allowed to have our passions and no one can peg you for being wrong or right in your choices. All of us know we want to do what we each feel is right for our children and we have the right to choose.  For example, you aren't required to be vegan or baby wearing or breastfeeding or co-sleeping, but you can and do accept being open to knowing and caring that others are.  This community lends itself and encourages others to be open to learning more, doing better for themselves, their families, the environment and the rest of humanity.

One of my favorite recipes:

Chicken Bone Broth/Stock from Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon
https://www.westonaprice.org/health-topics/food-features/broth-is-beautiful/

1 whole free-range chicken or 2 to 3 pounds of bony chicken parts, such as necks, backs, breastbones and wings*
gizzards from one chicken (optional)
2-4 chicken feet (optional)
4 quarts cold filtered water
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 large onion, coarsely chopped
2 carrots, peeled and coarsely chopped
3 celery stalks, coarsely chopped
1 bunch parsley

*Note: Farm-raised, free-range chickens give the best results. Many battery-raised chickens will not produce stock that gels.

If you are using a whole chicken, cut off the wings and remove the neck, fat glands and the gizzards from the cavity. Cut chicken parts into several pieces. (If you are using a whole chicken, remove the neck and wings and cut them into several pieces.) Place chicken or chicken pieces in a large stainless steel pot with water, vinegar and all vegetables except parsley. Let stand 30 minutes to 1 hour. Bring to a boil, and remove scum that rises to the top. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 6 to 8 hours. The longer you cook the stock, the richer and more flavorful it will be. About 10 minutes before finishing the stock, add parsley. This will impart additional mineral ions to the broth.
Remove whole chicken or pieces with a slotted spoon. If you are using a whole chicken, let cool and remove chicken meat from the carcass. Reserve for other uses, such as chicken salads, enchiladas, sandwiches or curries. Strain the stock into a large bowl and reserve in your refrigerator until the fat rises to the top and congeals. Skim off this fat and reserve the stock in covered containers in your refrigerator or freezer.
