"PROHIBIT a utility from installing a "SMART METER" on a customer's premises unless the customer has provided consent."
I live in the City of Naperville, Illinois, where we are victims of forced installation of so-called digital "smart meters." Smart meters are hi-tech electrical meters that record energy usage every few minutes and then transmit that information wirelessly, in most cases, to central utility computers.
Many people consider these devices an invasion of privacy; there are cyber security threats for theft and misuse of the data; and there is needless (and involuntary) exposure to radio frequency radiation.
All across this nation, local grassroots organizations oppose these installations by writing to their legislators, posting signs and locking fences, and initiating lawsuits. In some cases, we pay penalty fees in order to have a non-wireless type meter still attached to our homes.
Just last month,
two Naperville mothers were arrested for attempting to block smart meter installations. People in some locations have no options at all except to have their electric service disconnected if they don't want one of these new smart meters.
Although there is good localized opposition to smart meters, it will be a challenge for me to reach the new White House petition threshold of 100,000 signatures within a 30-day period to receive a response to the petition.
In this age of social media, I am hoping to convince a few prominent organizations and celebrities to review this issue and promote my WhiteHouse.gov petition.
If you have time, please read the attached
PDF file that more fully describes the issues involved. If you support this petition, please sign it and consider promoting it further. (If you are not registered with WhiteHouse.gov, you'll need to establish an account to be able to sign.)
To promote the petition, you could, as an example, tweet out something like the following:
Check out WH petition opposing smart meters. Good idea to sign for freedom lovers who want secure healthy home. Link at http://wh.gov/dA1k
Thanks for reading this e-mail and I hope you'll find a way to support my petition. It would mean a lot to those of us who believe that "smart meters" are a really "dumb idea."
Sincerely,
K. T. Weaver
