Notes from the November Meeting

Have you ever witnessed your children or experienced yourself "vegging out" in front of the television? Have you wondered if its really all that bad, or promised not to let your kids watch too much T.V.....tomorrow?  The November meeting left everyone who attended feeling happily validated or with renewed commitment to turning off the television, computers, video gaming systems and essentially anything equipped with a screen.  Barbara DuRocher and Carlene Mogavero gave an informative overview of brain structure and development and the physiological changes that occur when we, and especially children, are in front of television and other screens.  They also explained the psychological and behavioral impact that screens can have on children.  After the presentation, attendees shared experiences and great ideas on how to address the inevitable protests from kids and the sometimes harsh judgements from others.  It is no surprise that there simply is nothing better for kids than good old fashioned play, nature and story telling.

I've been a member of Holistic Moms since December of 2008.

My top holistic passion is homeopathy and nutrient-dense foods, but I also am a huge advocate of natural childbirth and breastfeeding.

My favorite thing about being part of Holistic Moms Network is the community of like-minded women.  I learn so much from the group.  I feel more informed after meetings and individual discussions.  I strive to improve my parenting as well as my family's health and vitality.

My husband, Scott, and I will be celebrating 8 years of marriage in a few days.  We have a son turning 5 just before Christmas and a daughter who is 2 1/2.  We are expecting our third baby to arrive in early December.  We have a dog named Jhinka who is a samoyed.  We also have a fancy-tailed goldfish named Ping who was a prize from a carnival last year.  We built a 12'x4' raised bed garden this summer and hope to plant our first vegetable garden in the spring.
